Never did I think I’d be writing a post like this outside of hurricane season, but here we are!
Most of us are currently spending a lot of time stuck in the house practicing “social distancing” in hopes of avoiding the coronavirus. Even as a stay-at-home mama this is all new for me because we’re so used to finding something to do outside of the house to burn off energy or just find a change of scenery.
Over the past week though I’ve been rolling with the punches and determined to make the most out of this situation. Like I mentioned in my Guarding Your Heart post, we’re utilizing this time to create memories with each other.
Some of the things I’m sharing are things we traditionally use, especially on days we don’t leave the house and some things I bought specifically for entertaining Raelynn while we’re stuck in the house. I thought this would be the perfect time to not only introduce Raelynn to some of my favorite childhood activities but also discover new things to do together!
Sidewalk Chalk (Perfect for hopscotch or simply just drawing a picture!)
Bubble Machine (and don’t forget extra bubbles!)
Easel Paper + Crayons (Also found these crayons for smaller hands)
Coloring and Sticker Books
Puzzles (Name + Shapes + Busy Board + Numbers)
Family games (Here’s our current favorite adult game and family game! My sister-in-law put us on the potato toss game and I’m pretty sure we love it more than Raelynn!)
A simple game of catch with balloons (This is literally Raelynn’s favorite thing to do right now)
Dance Party! (We usually just play this Disney favorites playlist or this Sesame Street playlist on Spotify)
Sensory buckets (I plan on trying this one with Raelynn this week! I love these though because you can always find these materials in your pantry! There’s plenty of ideas on Pinterest and I’m constantly posting ideas on my motherhood board as well…so follow me!)
As adults, this is a time of uncertainty, which means it’s likely 10 times more confusing for our littles. This whole experience reminds me of the 2004 hurricane season. Back to back hurricanes caused us to be out of school for almost a month. My memories of that time aren’t fearful though, it’s actually the opposite because of the homey environment and certainty my parents ensured we had. Even to this day I know to be prepared for hurricanes but never fearful, I rather look at it as an opportunity to love on my family.
Same situation here, we bought our groceries, we’re staying at home and we’re constantly washing our hands but I don’t want fear projected onto Raelynn. So I’m keeping things as normal as possible. Our routine may look a little different than it did a month ago but it’s nonetheless our routine.
It’s our job as parents to set the blueprint for our babies.
They must be informed but they also need to know they’re protected. Things may look a little different for a while but our faith rests in God, not this ever-changing world.
