Happy Holy Week!
I literally get chills and overwhelmingly filled with joy when I think about celebrating this week. The story of the crucifixion, burial, and resurrection of Christ is single-handedly the most joyous and miraculous story in history!
It is because of these events we are free from the shambles of a sinful world.
“We are made right with God by placing our faith in Jesus Christ. And this is true for everyone who believes, no matter who we are. For everyone has sinned we all fall short of God’s glorious standard. Yet God, in His grace, freely makes us right in His sight. He did this through Christ Jesus when He freed us from the penalty of our sins.”
Romans 3:22-24
The most beautiful part of it all? He paid it all for us even in the midst of our mess because He loves us. Even though we’re undeserving He sees us in a different light. The gift of salvation and being seen as pure in His eyes is all ours as long as we accept and believe in Him with a repentant heart.
My sweet Raelynn is only 2 but these are the seeds we’re trying to plant in her now.
I can’t expect her to process it all now, but if I do nothing else for her as her mama I will be satisfied with knowing that I planted these seeds in her from the start. My prayer is that these seeds will one day grow into fruit that will turn her heart towards Him.
Aside from telling her the story of Christ ourselves and reading to her, I wanted to do a fun and educational activity with her to mark the occasion.
I came across this idea of empty tomb rolls on Pinterest and thought it was the perfect tradition to start with her. As of lately, she’s obsessed with helping me cook so I knew this would be perfect!
The recipe is super simple and super easy to make which I loved because it meant that she could get her hands dirty and do a lot of the work herself (with me over her shoulder of course).
All you need is…
- Pastry rolls, we simply used the Pillsbury crescent rolls
- Cinnamon and Sugar mixture
- Melted Butter
- Marshmallows
- Preheat the oven to 375 degrees and spray a pan with a non-stick spray
- Dip the marshmallows in melted butter and then in the cinnamon-sugar mixture.
- Roll the dipped marshmallows in your dough until completely covered. Make sure you also pinch the ends of the rolled dough so that the ends are completely sealed.
- Place rolled pastries on the pan and in the oven for 12 minutes at 375 degrees
- Brush any leftover butter on top of the rolls and sprinkle any remaining cinnamon-sugar mixture on top.
The meaning
The marshmallows represent Jesus’ body.
The Cinnamon-sugar mixture represents the spices Jesus’ body was preserved with. (John 19:39-40)
The puff pastry is the tomb that Jesus was placed in and was sealed shut with Him inside. (John 19:42)
After baking, Jesus’ body (the marshmallow) should no longer be there. He has risen and the tomb is empty! (Matthew 28: 5-7)
Simple enough, right?! I’m really excited to start traditions like this one with Raelynn and I’m hoping she’ll remember these moments and possibly even pass them down to her kids.
These seeds matter! So if you have a little one, try this out! Share the story with them no matter how young they are. Even if you don’t have little ones around, still share the Good News because seeds can be planted in every one of us!
