It’s kind of become a tradition in our household to have a family meeting on New Years Eve and talk about our goals. I’m a planner and my husband isn’t but this is the one time in the year we’re both very adamant about making sure we’re walking into the new year on the same page. One of the most beautiful things about marriage is having an accountability partner! Through sharing our goals and visions for not only ourselves but for our family as whole we are awarded the opportunity to bounce ideas off of one another and push each other to new levels. As ridiculous as it sounds, we also love to include Raelynn in on the fun! We want to teach her at a young age the process of setting and accomplishing goals!
What you need:
- Project board/Corkboard/Dry Erase Board (I use 1 of our unused glass dry erase boards)- Anything to stick your notes to!
- Sticky notes in different colors
- Your Family!
Step 1:
Create the categories you want to set goals in.
We traditionally have 6: Relationships, Faith, Career/Development, Financial, Fun, Physical/Health. You can start with these 6 if you’d like, or tweak them according to your lifestyle. For an example, if you work a traditional “corporate” job setting but you also have a side-gig, you may want to split up Career/Development. Or if there is a specific goal you’d like to accomplish but requires multiple steps, you may want to give that goal a category of it own. It is totally up to you!
Step 2:
Give each family member a different color sticky note and tell them to write as many goals as they have for that specific category.
In the picture above (just in case you’re a visual person ?): all of Raelynn’s goals are written on the light pink sticky notes, Shawn’s goals are on the blue stickies and mine are written on the hot pink stickies.
Step 3:
Read goals aloud together while placing them on the board.
Along with simply reading the goals aloud, we also discuss how we can help each other accomplish “said” goal. For an example, I may put on the board “I want to write for 30 mins a day”. From there, Shawn and I will discuss how we can work together to ensure I get my time to write daily in a way that fits both of our daily schedules.
Step 4:
Pray over your goals.
In our family, we do nothing without including God in it. Although we have desires, we only want the desires that He places on our heart not the ones from our flesh. So we constantly consult and seek in Him before we make any moves. Although we have plans, we also understand that His ways are higher than ours. So we pray that ultimately His will prevails in our life and that He gives us clear understanding on how to proceed (or even adjust) each and every goal on our board.
Step 5:
This isn’t really a step, but remember to have fun!
Play your favorite music in the background or do this over your favorite dinner! Another tidbit I’ve learned is that this isn’t the time to dwell on the things you haven’t accomplished. With the right amount of faith and work any of your goals can be achieved. Pivot where you need to pivot but try not to be too hard on yourself. The purpose of this activity is to give you a fresh and clean slate!
Let me know if you end up having a goal-setting party with your family to ring in the new year! I’d love to hear what worked out for you!

Michelle
